Library exhibit looks at global health issues

Lewis Library is hosting a traveling exhibit through September that examines advances in global health.

Lindsey Lowry, Electronic Resources Librarian, arranged to bring “Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Healthto the college.

“The library staff recently went to Clayton State University for a workshop, and they had an exhibit there,” she said. “I learned that traveling exhibits from the National Library of Medicine are available free to libraries. We only had to pay shipping costs.”

She said she and Library Director Charlene Baxter had been talking about bringing exhibitions to the library, and thought this particular one would be appropriate.

“It touches on timeless and timely topics that are relevant to our students and our mission – things like global engagement, nursing and service around the world, such as the Jan Term service trips to the Philippines and Costa Rica.”

“Against the Odds” was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. It looks at a revolution in global health that is taking place in villages and towns around the world.

“Communities, in collaboration with scientists, advocates, governments, and international organizations, are taking up the challenge to prevent disease and improve quality of life,” according to the exhibit’s website.

“‘Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health’ examines stories of the people who are working on a wide range of issues around the world – from community health to conflict, disease to discrimination. As we learn more about the challenges of the past, we join a growing community of people committed to global health.”

Lowry said she is looking forward to having other traveling exhibits at the library in the future. “Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health” runs through Sept. 29 and is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Lowry at llowry@lagrange.edu or 706-880-8962.
